How to Earn Money Playing Video Games Featured ImageIt’s every gamers’ wildest fantasy to be able to make a full-time income online playing video games.

But, our parents have always said you can’t get paid to play PS4 games, right?

What if I told you that it was quite possible to make cash playing video games?

Seriously, it is.

And believe it or not, it may be easier than you ever thought possible, if you know exactly what steps you need to take to succeed with earning money by gaming.

How Can You Make Money Playing Video Games?

There are quite a few ways that you can start making a good side income playing video games.

Over time, this side hustle can become a full-time gig if you know what steps to take to get it there.

I’m sure that you’ve heard just how successful gamers like PewDiePie and DrDisRespect are, but live streaming is one of the harder ways to earn an income online playing games.

I’d know.

In the past, I’ve done it.

As I’ve mentioned before on this site and others, the very first way that I made any money on the Internet was by selling guides on how to make gold in World of Warcraft.

It was certainly much easier back then than it is now. The good thing now however, is that many gamers don’t think they can earn an income from playing.

Many gamers who know that it’s possible to make money playing games just haven’t learned the right steps to take to make their dreams a reality.

With that said, by following the four easy steps laid out below, you can quickly learn how to earn money playing video games from home.

The First Step -Deciding on a Game to Play

The very first thing that you must do if you’re wanting to make money gaming online, is to decide exactly what game you’re going to be playing.

It’s important to note that you’re going to be much more successful if you choose a game that has some popularity behind it.

While you may be extremely passionate about Diablo I, it’s not that popular of a game anymore. For that reason, it’s not a game you’re going to want to play if your goal is to make money.

A great place to go if you’re wanting to know what games have the potential to make money is

If you’re unfamiliar with, it’s a site that allows gamers to stream their game play for subscribers and tips.

What you need to look for can be found by clicking on browse and then sorting the results by popularity as you can see in the screenshot below.

Look at the top 20 to 25 games, and then choose a title that you enjoy from those.

Step Two – Creating Your Own Niche Site

If making money by playing games is your goal, the very first thing you’re going to want to do is to create a website that you own so that you always have a place to send people who want to follow your game play and gaming advice.

While you can make a substantial amount of money simply streaming games on twitch, and making videos on YouTube, you ultimately have no control should the platforms choose to ban you.

Does this happen?

You bet it does.

Worst of all, it often happens without any warning whatsoever.

Happen to be playing music on the radio in the background? You may find yourself on the receiving end of a Parma ban.

How do you avoid this?

Again, this is why it’s important to have your own website to send your audience to.

On its own, your site can potentially earn you a full-time income even without creating the very first video if you do it the right way.

Once you have your own site up and running, it’s time to move on to getting people to the site that are interested in what you must show them about gaming.

The First Way to Get People on Your Site – Writing Blog Posts

The very first way to get people coming to your website is by having them find you on Google.

How can you get in front of people on Google?

Well, there are actually a few different ways it can be done.

The method that I’m talking about is by creating blog posts or articles that talk about your games and game play.

You can write about things such as how to guides like the one you’re reading now, game tips and tricks, new patches and changes to game play, game reviews, equipment reviews, and much more …

Best of all, you just have to write like you talk.

There’s no need to be a college-level writer.

In fact, you want to try to keep things at 8th grade reading level.

Think you can write like an 8th grader?

I’m sure you can.

Did you just figure out a sweet way to make currency in your game?

Write about it.

Have an amazing kill streak count?

Write about it.

I think you’re able to get the point here without me having to give more examples, LOL.

The two keys to success with this are making certain that you’re adding new content regularly, and that you’re targeting the best keywords possible for your audience.

Step Three – Create a Gaming Channel on YouTube

Serious gamers understand the importance of having a YouTube channel if they’re wanting to make money playing games.

With that said, there are a couple things you need to know before you make your channel.

First, make sure you name it something that will allow you to play multiple games.

Yes, you want to start this entire journey by picking again that’s popular, but if you’ve been gaming for very long at all, you already know hot titles come and go like the wind.

For that reason, eventually you will have to change the game that you are playing to a new more popular title.

So, you don’t want to name your channel something like MinecraftWithJaason.

Instead, go for something like JasonPwnsDaNewbs or GamingWithJason or even Jason9214Games.

This allows you to have the flexibility to switch games later while still giving you the ability to build an audience with the popular title right now.

When you switch down the road, you can bring a lot of your audience with you so long as you’re still playing in a similar genre.

Also, a lot of your audience will come along for the ride even if you switch genres just because they enjoy the content you’re putting out.

make money gaming keywordsThere’s one more thing you need to do before making videos for your channel …

… Once again, you need to do good keyword research.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve coached gamers with marketing online who weren’t getting any views on their YouTube channels only to find out that they had no idea what I was talking about when I asked what keywords they were targeting.

Again, if you’re wanting to learn more about how to find keywords, you can check out some great video training here.

Okay, once you have your channel named, and some good keywords to go after, it’s time to start producing videos.

A great thing to do here is to combine the second step with this one so that you can get as many people as possible seeing what you have to offer.

So, when you find a keyword that people are looking for, you want to create both a video and a written blog post on the keyword.

For example, if you’re talking about how to increase your kill streaks on Call of Duty, you can make a video about it first, and then just type up what you said in the video and provide a few screenshots.

You want to do this because there are a lot of different words that you can potentially rank for on Google that you may be saying in the video, but YouTube lacks the ability to know exactly what you’re talking about in your videos.

Make certain that you ask people to like and subscribe to your YouTube channel in your videos, and tell them to head over to your website for more information about any of your games.

Also, when you make your post on your site, go ahead and embed the video inside of it as well to have the best results possible and allow your audience multiple ways to consume your content.

This will allow you to grow your YouTube following as more people visit your website, and allow you to grow your website traffic when others find you on YouTube.

Step 4 – Bringing Twitch Into The Mix

Yes, we’re waiting until step four to even discuss Twitch.

This is because Twitch is a very competitive platform that is often difficult for newcomers to break through on.

If you already have an established audience on your website and YouTube, it’s much easier for you to bring those people with you to Twitch.

This will let you get into the twitch partner program much earlier, and since you already understand the fundamentals of Internet marketing, you can provide them with a better experience overall when you get started on Twitch.

Remember how when you’re getting started with your website and YouTube, you have an advantage in being able to target keywords that other gamers are going after.

On Twitch, this isn’t the case.

People who have the largest viewing audience are shown first. So, if you’re new and have only a few views, you’ll find yourself listed at the bottom of the page.

As you can easily imagine, not many people are going to scroll to the bottom of the channel list.

That’s the main reason that you want to wait until you already have an established audience through other means before going on Twitch.

This will let you hit twitch with a larger viewer base, and ultimately help you to explode your audience growth when you land on the platform.

In short, this will let you make partner with twitch much earlier, and allow you to begin receiving tips as quickly as possible.

Since your audience is already visiting your website and watching your YouTube videos, you already have revenue established long before you try to create a live streaming channel on Twitch.

Best of all, since you’ll already understand affiliate marketing, you can send your twitch traffic to your website or YouTube channel so that you can make even higher earnings through the same content that you’re already providing.

Also, you can record your Twitch streams, break them up into sections, and post them on your YouTube channel while also blogging about them on your website.

All in all, this will allow you to be exposed to different people across multiple platforms, and grow your gaming business into a full-time income.

Final Thoughts – Yes, It’s Really This Simple

Yes, I know I really haven’t broken the mold when it comes to talking about how to earn money playing games online.

It really is as simple as the steps that I’ve laid out above to earn a full-time income playing video games.

The important thing is that you have a clear path to follow from start to finish so that you understand the fundamentals of Internet marketing while you are starting your gaming business.
